Arctic to Africa Stage 1
What a start to our great challenge! Setting off from the most northern point in Europe; Nordkapp, at Midnight on Midsummers day; our five cyclists began their journey. Nothing could have prepared them for what the next two weeks held. Having to cycle in minus degree temperatures, travelling through the Arctic in weather which locals claimed to be the coldest in years, on roads which seemed to never end; it was down to their sheer determination that enabled them to keep getting back on their bike every day.
The first stage of Arctic to Africa took the cyclists through their first three countries – Norway, Finland and Sweden.
Arriving in Gothenburg two weeks later; the finishing point for stage 1, cyclists and back-up alike were full of emotion from the past two challenging weeks; however, everyone was so proud of the achievement and so grateful to everyone back home for their ongoing messages of support and donations.
Up next, is for the cyclists to get back into training ready for stage 2 of Arctic to Africa, where they’ll be travelling from Gothenburg to Monaco in 2018! Keep checking our social media and website for more information, however, until then please check out our fundraising events; The Great Nidd Bike Ride & The Great Nidd Bike Ball! This is your chance to step up to a challenge of your own in aid of Alzheimers Research UK.
Arctic to Africa would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, the cyclists for committing to this extreme challenge; the back-up crew for making the trip possible; our friends and family at home who gave motivation throughout the trip; everyone who donated; to the sponsors – Oak by Design, New Lodge Contractors, The Station Hotel, Kerry and Logic Fire and Security; and also to Alzheimer’s Research UK who have been so amazingly helpful both before and during the first stage.
